tr SOME LOST UPAPURĀṆAS 507 later than the Tantra-sÄra. As in no other work known
to us there is any reference to or quotation from the 'Madhavi-
purÄṇa', we do not know whether there was at all any
UpapurÄṇa bearing this title. It is highly probable that
the reading ‘mÄdhavÄ«-purÄṇe' in Bhairava's work is a
scribal mistake for 'mÄdhaviye purÄṇe' and that the verse,
ascribed to the 'Madhavi-purÄṇa', was derived from some
work of MadhavÄcÄrya. This probability gains ground
when we see that this verse has been quoted in MÄdhavÄ-
cÄrya's commentary (I. i, p. 441) on the ParÄÅ›ara-smá¹›ti
with the words "purÄṇe 'pi", and that at another place
(fol. 1b) in the Acara-nirṇaya-bhÄskara-samgraha a verse
(brahma-murÄris tripurÄntakÄrÄ« etc.=VÄmana-p. 14. 23)
has been quoted with the words 'mÄdhaviye purÄṇe', evi-
dently to mean that the verse was derived from MÄdhavÄ-
cÄrya's commentary (II. i, pp. 220-221) on the ParÄÅ›ara-
smrti, where it has been quoted with the mention of the
VÄmana-p. as its source.
The derivation of PurÄṇic verses
from MÄdhavÄcÄrya's works with the words 'mÄdhaviye
purÄṇe' is not peculiar to Bhairava alone. There are other
Nibandha-writers who have used the same words in the
cases of some of the PurÄṇic verses derived from MÄdhavÄ-
cÄrya's works. See, for instance, Nilakantha-bhaá¹­á¹­a's Acara-
mayūkha, p. 107-
mÄdhaviye purÄṇe-
'yat phalam soma-yÄgena prÄpnoti dhanavÄn dvijaá¸� /
samyak pañca-mahÄyajñair daridras tad avÄpnuyÄt //'
It is to be noted that this verse (yat phalam soma-yÄgena
etc.) is found quoted by MadhavÄcÄrya in his commentary
on the ParÄÅ›ara-smá¹›ti (AcÄra-kÄṇá¸a, AdhyÄya I, p. 413)
with the words "purÄṇe 'pi."
14. The Mahesa UpapurÄṇa.
This work has been mentioned in two lists only, viz.,
those ascribed to the 'Brahma-vaivarta' in Mitra-miśra's
Viramitrodaya and GopÄladÄsa's Bhakti-ratnÄkara.
Though derived from the same source, these two lists differ
