Essay name: Studies in the Upapuranas
Author: R. C. Hazra
This book studies the Upapuranas: a vast category of (often Sanskrit) literature representing significant historical, religious, and cultural insights of the ancient Indian civilization. These texts provide rich information, especially on Hinduism covering theology, mythology, rituals, and dynastic genealogies.

STUDIES IN THE UPAPURANAS
in the body of the chapters¹? as well as in the colophons, indicates
that it is not the original Naradiya-p., the words 'bį¹hat,' 'vį¹ddha'
etc. being found to be prefixed to the titles of comparatively late
works only. As the present Naradiya-p. incorporates all the chapters
of the Bį¹hannaradiya, 168 we cannot agree with Winternitz in holding
that the Bį¹hannÄradÄ«ya-p. 'is generally so called to distinguish it from
the NÄrada - or NĆ£radÄ«ya - UpapurÄį¹a'.169 That this work is merely an
Upapuraį¹a and not the same as the genuine NÄradÄ«ya-p., is shown
definitely by the Matsya, Skanda and Agni-p., of which the first
describes the NÄradÄ«ya-p. as follows:
"yatrÄha nÄrado dharmÄn bį¹hat-kalpÄÅrayÄį¹i ca/
paƱcavimÅat-sahasrÄį¹i nÄradÄ«yam tad ucyate//"
(Mat. 53.23)
"That (PurÄį¹a,) in which NÄrada proclaims the (religious) duties
as well as (other matters) connected with the Bį¹hat Kalpa and (which
contains) 25000 (verses), is called NÄradÄ«ya".
