2.7. Rudra as ī
In the ṻ岹, Rudra is known by this name.
Sāyaṇācārya gives his explanation regarding the term ī as:
ī� siṃhamiva bhayaṅkaram or formidable like a wild beast.[1]
In the Atharvaveda also, Rudra is regarded as ī.[2]
Here, Sāyaṇācārya takes the term ī as:
The term ī denotes the one who is formidable and one whom everyone is afraid of. In the Purāṇic literature, this name is used for lord Ś repeatedly.[4]
