Essay name: The Navya-Nyaya theory of Paksata (Study)

Author: Kazuhiko Yamamoto
Affiliation: Savitribai Phule Pune University / Department of Sanskrit and Prakrit Languages

This essay studies the Navya-Nyaya theory of Paksata within Indian logic by exploring the Paksataprakarana on the Tattvacintamani of Gangesa Upadhyaya and the Didhiti of Raghunata Siromani. The term “paksa originally meant a subject or proposition but evolved to signify a key logical term, representing the subject of an inference or the locus of inference.

TCD the inferential cognition can arise. But the absence of all the obstructing factors cannot exist in the inferential cognition, because if it is so, cause in general, i. e. not only material cause and efficient cause, will cause but also non-material exist in the effect. And also the self linking relation (svarupasambandha) is considered between cause and effect, but this self linking relation is the Prabhakara Mimams aka's view. The Prabhakara school thinks that when there is cause and effect at the same time, the cause and effect have the self linking relation (svarupasambandha) and not the inherence relation. Raghunatha states this Prabhakara's this Prabhakara's idea in text-54. Cf. notes of text-54.
