This page relates ‘Vrishni Dynasty� of the English study on the Matsya-purana: a Sanskrit text preserving ancient Indian traditions and legends written in over 14,000 metrical verses. In this study, the background and content of the Matsyapurana is outlined against the cultural history of ancient India in terms of religion, politics, geography and architectural aspects. It shows how the encyclopedic character causes the text to deal with almost all the aspects of human civilization.

Part 2.1i - The ṛṣṇi Dynasty
ṛṣṇi, the son of ٱٲ had two wives Իī and ī. From Իī ṛṣṇi begot a son named Sumitra. ī on the other hand had five sons named ۳ܻᾱ, ٱ𱹲īḍhṣa, Anamitra, Ś, ṛtṣaṇa.[1] Anamitra had a son named Nighna. Nighna had two sons-Prasena and ŚپԲ. Satrajita had one hundred one sons from his ten wives who were all daughters of king Kaikeya.[2] ṅg첹 was the eldest son of Satrajita.
Anamitra, the youngest son of ṛṣṇi was succeeded by his son ŚԾ. ŚԾ had a son named Satyaka. Satyaka had a son named ٲⲹ쾱. Satyavāna and ۳ܻܲԲ are the sons of ٲⲹ쾱. ṅg was the son of ۳ܻܲԲ. ṅg begot a son named Dyuyi. Dyuyi was blessed with a son named Yugandhara.[3]
From his wife ṛtī, Anamitra begot sons like ۳ܻᾱ, ṛṣ and ṣaٰ. Among these three ṛṣ was the father of Jayanta. Jayanta begot a son ū by name. He married to 鲹ٲ from whom he begot eleven sons. The eleven sons were Upalambha, , ṛk, Vīryya, Savītara (ŚԾ), 貹ṣa, ŚٰܲԲ, Ჹⲹ, Dharmabit, Dharmavarmā and ٳṛṣṭaԲ.[4] He had other two sons Devavāna and Upadeva from another wife . From wife śī, he begot the sons ū, ṛt, վṛt, śٳٳ峾, ܲ, ܱś첹, Ҳṣaṇa, ṛṣṭiԱ, ܻ, Śپ, ū, Vajrabhūmi, Śramiṣṭha and Śṇa.[5]
ٱ𱹲īḍhṣa married ṣvī and from her he begot a son named Śū. Śū had ten sons viz., Vasudeva (ĀԲ첹岹Իܲ), ٱ𱹲, Devāśravā, ṛṣṭi, ŚԾ, Nanda, ṛñjⲹ, Ś峾, Śī첹, ṃyū貹.[6]
Vasudeva from his wife dzṇ� begot sons by name 峾, ṇa, Durddama, Damanam, Subhru, ʾṇḍ첹 and ѲԳ.[7] Vasudeva from his wife ٱ𱹲ī begot sons viz., Śaurī, ṣeṇa, Kīrtimāna, ī, Bhadraseṇa, Ṛṣ and Bhadravideha.[8] They all were killed by the King ṃs. From Devaki’s womb Śrikṛṣṇa took birth.[9] After ṛṣṇa, ٱ𱹲ī gave birth to Śubhadrā. Sahadeva, Upāsangadhara are also the sons of Vasudeva from his wife Tamra. From Upādevī, Vasudeva begot dzԲ, Vijaya and Devala.[10] Again Vasudeva from his wife Vṛkṣadevī begot Mahatmā, and Nandaka. He had also a son named ś첹 from his wife who is from Vaisya clan.[11] From his wife Sutanu he begot Paṇḍra and from 鲹ٳī he begot Kapila.123
Uddhava was the son of ٱ𱹲(son of Śū). Anadhṛṣṭi begot a son named ŚٰܲԲ.[12] King Karuṣa adopted a son named Sucandra.[13]
King Nandana had two sons ղԳپ and ղԳī. վᲹ, Dhanu, Ś峾 and ṛñjⲹ are the four valorous sons of ī첹.[14] It is said that Śīṛṣṇa had sixteen thousand wives and hundreds of thousands sons. ṛṣṇa begot sons Cārudeṣña, Pradyumna, ܳ, , Sudeṣña, Bhadra, ʲś, ܱܲٲ, ܲ, ܳka, Cāruhasa and a daughter ܳī.[15] From his wife ٲⲹ峾 he begot four sons viz., Rohita, Dīptimāna, Tāmracakra and Jalandhama. ṛṣṇa begot ܻṣṇ and 峾 from his wife 峾ī.128
