Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Kailasa Mountain� of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

There are many Mountains and rivers mentioned in the Matsya ±Ê³Ü°ùÄåṇa , but the description of the °­²¹¾±±ôÄå²õ²¹ Mountain and the river ³Ò²¹²Ô²µÄå (Ganges) in the chapter 121, have particularly enriched the geographical aspect of India. Mount °­²¹¾±±ôÄå²õ is according to mythology a very sacred Mountain where the abode of Lord Åš¾±±¹²¹. From the past this Mountainhas been considered as a special pilgrimage site. Not only Hinduism but this is sacred place for Buddhism but this is a sacred place for Buddhism and Jainism as well.

There are huge descriptions of °­²¹¾±±ôÄå²õ²¹ Mountain in the verses 1 to 25 of chapter 121. According to the ±Ê³Ü°ùÄåṇa in the middle of the ±á¾±³¾Äå±ô²¹²â²¹ Mountains, there is a Mountain named °­²¹¾±±ôÄå²õ²¹[1]. From the °­²¹¾±±ôÄå²õ²¹ ³Ü±è²¹³Ù²â²¹°ìÄå a lake has appeared named Mandodaka , whose water is very pure and cold. It is said that the water is so bright as curd. The prosperous divine ²Ñ²¹²Ô»åÄå°ì¾±²ÔÄ« river flows from the same lake. There is a divine and great forest called Nandan on the banks of that river. In the northeast direction of the °­²¹¾±±ôÄå²õ²¹ is a Mountain named °ä³ó²¹²Ô»å°ù²¹±è°ù²¹²ú³óÄå , which is bright like a gem. It is decorated with all kinds of metals and are spread to divine Subel Mountain, riched with many kinds of fragrant. Near the mount °ä³ó²¹²Ô»å°ù²¹±è°ù²¹²ú³óÄå there is a divine lake known as Achchhoda (Achchhavata ), from which a holy divine river named Achchhodika (Achchhoda ) has emerged. On the banks of that river is a divine and beautiful great forest called Chaitraratha . The prosperous ²Ñ²¹²Ô»åÄå°ì¾±²ÔÄ« and holy Achchhoda –both these rivers have been found in the ocean flowing through the middle of the Earth-circle. In the south-east directionof Kailas , there is a huge Mountain named the ±á±ð³¾²¹Å›á¹›n²µ²¹ . It extends to the divine Suvel Mountain. Luster of the Mountain is full of all kinds of medicines and is full of metals called ²Ñ²¹¾±Å›¾±±ô . There is a huge celestial lake named Lohit in its foot land. It is the origin of a great river called Lohitya (the Brahmaputra ). On the banks of that river is a divine and vast forest called ³Õ¾±Å›´Ç°ì²¹ .[2]

In the northwest direction of the °­²¹¾±±ôÄå²õ²¹ , there is a Mountain called °­²¹°ì³Ü»å³¾Äå²Ô , on which all types of medicines are accessible. It has three beautiful black peaks like °­ÄåÂá²¹±ô (eyeliner)[3]. At the same time there is a very great Mountain named Vaidyuta , which is full of all metals. The Vaidyuta Mountain extends to the Trikuta Mountain. There is a holy, divine, great lake in the fool-province of the Mountain. The lake is called â€�²ÑÄå²Ô²¹²õ Sarovar â€�, from which the great river Sarayu is originated. On the coast of the Sarayu river there is a divine forest name ³Õ²¹¾±²ú³ó°ùÄåÂá²â²¹[4]. In the west direction of the °­²¹¾±±ôÄå²õ²¹ , there is a heavenly Mountain called ³Õ²¹°ù³Üṇa , full of all the medicines. It is said that this ³Õ²¹°ù³Üṇa Mountain is the top Mountain which is adorned with gold, beloved of Lord ²Ñ²¹³óÄå»å±ð±¹²¹ and rich in golden divine rocks. It looks like the Mountain is touching the sky with its thousands of golden shining peaks. There is a great divine Mountain named Åšá¹›n²µ²¹±¹Äå²Ô , which is prosperous and inaccessible. It is said that Lord ²Ñ²¹³óÄå»å±ð±¹²¹ resides on that Mountain. In the Mountainous region of that Mountain, there is a lake named Åš²¹¾±±ô´Ç»å²¹ . From that lake the river Åš²¹¾±±ô´Ç»å²¹ka flows. The river also called °ä²¹°ìá¹£uá¹£i . It has drifted between the two Mountains to the west sea. In the north direction of the °­²¹¾±±ôÄå²õ is a huge Mountain named ±á¾±°ù²¹á¹‡y²¹Å›á¹›n²µ²¹ , which extends from Haritala to Gaura Mountain. Many divine medicines are obtained on this ±á¾±°ù²¹á¹‡y²¹Å›á¹›n²µ²¹ Mountain. In its plant, there is a very beautiful celestial lake named Bindusar which is enriched with golden sandstone.[5]

The °­²¹¾±±ôÄå²õ²¹ Mountain is located near Lake the Manasarovar and the lake ¸é²¹°ìá¹£Äs³Ù²¹±ô close to the source of some of the longest Asian rivers. The exact location of the Mountain in present time is Tibet Autonomous region, China. According to the Jain scriptures the °­²¹¾±±ôÄå²õ²¹ Mountain is a holy place for the religion. The first Jain °ÕÄ«°ù³Ù³ó²¹á¹…k²¹°ù²¹ , Ṛṣabhadeva attained the â€�²Ñ´Ç°ìá¹£a â€� (To heaven and backâ€�Times of India Articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com, 11 January 2012) in the ´¡á¹£á¹­Äå±è²¹»å²¹ , the Mountain next to mount °­²¹¾±±ôÄå²õ²¹ .
