Worship & worshipper Dress code. 347 Dress and dressing play an important part in ritual worship. Clothing
of specific material and specific colour quicken the process of result. A
survey of the different specified colours and the clothing materials is taken
for study. The MLRK speaks of three colours - red, black and white. The
use of colours in ritual worship is age old. In the Dharmasūtras, the use of
coloured clothes is stated. The BDS states that the officiating priest should
wear red coloured clothes and red coloured turbans at the animal sacrifices,
the soma sacrifices etc... which are undertaken for the purpose of sorcery8³.
The GDS prohibits the use of red colour by a student of the graduate
student$4.
83 In the Pūrāṇas a red coloured garment is stated to be worth giving
while the blue colour is to be avoided 85. Red is the favourite colour of the
goddess. Though clothes of other colours are mentioned and offered, the
goddess is offered red coloured clothing in general. It is observed that the
worshipper of the goddess wears red colour clothes and red colour flowers in
worship. Scientifically too, red colour is stated to experience minimum
Բ�6.
The use of red coloured clothes in initiation ritual is recommended. It
is stated in the GST87 that initiation by a female preceptor clad in red clothes
is highly conducive of result.
