Worship or homage is a special term which has a variety of meanings
in the Sanskrit language as well as in the vernacular languages. The words
like arcanā, nama�, vandanā, pūjā, upāsanā, japa, homa, dhyāna etc...
imply worship. All these listed terms either form part of the process or they
are the means in themselves individually. These terms when focused reveal a
sort of evolution of the process "worship' in themselves. In the RV and
specially the Vedic literature, words such as nama�, arc, vand are seen
frequently. The process of worship was in the form of Mantras or praises
which was recited to glorify the deity. This form of worship was only verbal.
As time passed, the process of simple verbal homage and thanksgiving too
underwent modification. There was the introduction of concrete offerings as
a way of pleasing the deities. The Vedic deities were given offerings of
Soma and animal sacrifices. Soma as time passed, became difficult to obtain
and therefore, it was replaced by its substitutes. The process of offering
verbal homage was complimented with the accompaniment of flowers. The
Dravidian element of offering floral offerings with verbal chants is known as
pūjā. It is derived from the Tamil word 'pu' meaning flower. Thus, the
homage ritual in which 'pūkal' or flowers are predominantly used is pūjā.
These different terms, which occur as synonyms, are individual units in
themselves which constitute a complete process known as worship. As time
passed the simple religion of offering homage and thanksgiving under went
huge transformation and became a complex religion. Now there were certain
pre-requisitions in the form of qualifications and essential qualities in the
worshipper who came to be known as the sädhaka. The worship process
reflected the nature and the thought of the sädhaka. In the thesis, the focus
