Chapter 3. Minor goddesses Sandhya's boon. 191 Siva is pleased by Sandhya's penance and Sandhyā seeks as
a boon from Siva³³ the following-
33 May no living being be full of lust at the time of its
nativity.
� May no other woman become famous in all the three
worlds as she herself has become.
� The person, who becomes my friend, shall be her intimate
friend of pure mind.
� Any person who looks at her with lustful eyes shall loose
his manliness and become a eunuch.
The result of Sandhyā's penance is that Siva grants four
stages in the life of every one born on the earth. Living beings
will be lustful only when the third stage is attained and in some
cases towards the end of the second stage.
34 The story of Sandhyā is auspicious on hearing which, ladies
become chaste ³4. It is mentioned that Sandhyā performed a
penance and cast off her polluted body and was reborn as
Arundhati, the daughter of the excellent sage Medhātithi. She
performed all sacred rites as directed by Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva
and married Vasiṣṭa. She is of auspicious countenance, became
