chapter II Major goddesses Mantra. 115 Two types of mantra for the goddess Uma are found
mentioned in the Purāṇas 166.They are mono-syllabled and tri
syllabled.
(i) Mono-syllabled mantra - Mah.
(ii) Tri-syllabled mantra - Mah Pam Phat
Gauri-Meaning.
The dictionary meaning of Gauri is a young girl of eight years, prior
to menstruation and who is a virgin is Gaurī. She is the synonym of
Pārvati¹67. Another word Golā which means a large globular water jar
is synonym of Durgā¹68.

Occurrences.
Gauri, as a female divinity does not occur in the Vedic
texts. It is only in the epics and the Purāṇas, that her character and
function as a goddess belonging to the Siva group flourished.
The etymology of the word Gauri is uncertain and obscure.
Yaska derives the word Gaura from the root "ruc" = to shine 169.
