chapter II Major goddesses 62 worship system developed as a result. The reason for this
classification is that though all the five goddess find mention in the
Vedic literature and the line of their existence continues through the
ages till the present day. The study does not over look certain
exceptions at the individual level. These five goddesses are survivors
of the test of time. They have been molded by the belief-systems and 2
customs practiced through an indefinitely large period and have been
crystallized by ritual-practices that are followed. In the category of
'Vedic Goddesses two goddesses have been taken up for study.
Among the three principal goddesses which is the second section of in
the category of 'Later Vedic goddess also, a pattern of research has
been followed and accordingly all those aspects of a single goddess
are brought together and taken up for study.
A. Vedic goddesses.
The goddess Aditi and Prthivi have been included under the
heading principal goddesses because seen from the point of origin and
continuance, they have a wider scope. In fact, prithivi or the earth
goddesses has the widest scope trailing to the temple rituals practiced
till date. About Aditi her presence as the mother of the gods in the
Purāṇas and importance as such is worth noting and as such she is
taken up for study. Unlike the other goddesses who are present and
predominant in present day worship, Aditi is merely a shadowy figure
in the present times in terms of popularity.
