chapter 1. Introduction Mantra siddhi- Time and the indicators. 48 48 99 The MM speaks of the time span for 'Mantra-siddhi'. It states
that a 'Bīja-mantra' is successful in childhood, in youth a 'Mantra-
mantra' is successful and 'Mālā-mantra' is successful in old age.
The mantra which has been initiated is to be checked whether it
is successful to the sädhaka or otherwise. The texts of tantra like the
SVT 100, the BTS 101, and the MYS 102 speak of certain indicators of
'Japa-siddhi'. They are as follows-
If the initiated sees in dream a girl, an umbrella, a chariot, a
lamp, a palace, a lotus flower, a river, an elephant, a ram, a garland, a
sea, a flowering tree, a mountain, a horse, sacred flesh, wine,
spirituous liquor then the initiated mantra is successful for the
sādhaka. The BTS adds a celestial mango and a bull to the list. The
SVT adds the following - the union with a group of girls, the sight of
a king, elephants and beautiful woman singing and dancing.
The SVT also speaks of the censurable dreams which are as
follows, soldiers who are dark in complexion, who are oiled and strike,
the union with another mans wife, the destruction of a country due to
fire and wind, and the destruction of ones relatives.
The Jayākhya Samhita, a Pañcarātra work, says that various
obstacles and disturbances appear before the sādhaka for three years.
