experience the wisdom of Yogasutra of Patanjali The popularity of Yoga in the West is due to the efforts of Iyengar. He was born on 14th December 1918, in Bellur village in Kolar District of the Karnataka State, South India. A school teacher named Krishnamachar and Sheshamma were his parents. It is mentioned that throughout his childhood, Iyengar struggled with a number of diseases. At the age of 15, he went to live with his Brother-in-law, the well-known yogin Tirumalai Krishnamacharya in Mysore. According to the advice of Krishnamacharya, he learned to practice asanas and thereby steadily improved his health. In 1937, Iyengar moved to Pune to teach Yoga. In 1952, the famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin arranged for Iyengar to teach abroad. From then, he had visited and offered Yoga classes that increased the reputation of Yoga in the west. In 1975, he established the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune named after his late wife Ramamani. In 1984, he officially retired from teaching. Nevertheless, he continues to be active in the world of Iyengar Yoga, teaching special classes and writing books. He had authored 14 books related on the practice and philosophy of Yoga. 76

Among the books, Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama, Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali etc. are renowned in the world. Iyengar Yoga is meant for all and is a way of life. The use of props (designed by Iyengar himself) such as wooden gadgets, belts, ropes, etc., help the practitioner to achieve perfection in any posture.
