clearly shows points of connection with
असित जलदवृन्दैर्मिश्रसन्दिग्धशृङ्गो
गगनचरकुलानां विश्रमस्थानभूत� �
सुकविमतिविचित्रो मित्रसंयोगहृद्यो
नरपतिरिव नीचो दृश्यत� निष्फलाढ्य� �
[asita jaladavṛndairmiśrasandigdhaśṛṅgo
gaganacarakulānā� viśramasthānabhūta� |
sukavimativicitro mitrasaṃyogahṛdyo
narapatiriva nīco dṛśyate niṣphalāḍhya� |

The two verses, besides the simile of the "Nouveau
riche," contain a number of common words (underlined
above for easy reference) indicating a common authorship.
Similar features to the above anthology verse are found
in Cār, I. 26; Pañic, I. 6, 7, 18 ; Pratijñā, I. 4 ; Avi, V. 1
‘Adhya' ‘rich' seems to be a favourite
word with the writer of these plays.
and Car, I. 28 ?
“The resemblance shown is, be it noted," as
aptly observed by Dr. Thomas, "not between the
latter [i. e. the author of the Trivandrum plays] and
the author of some Svapnavāsavadatta, but between
him and Bhāsa nominatim�.!
Prof. Kuppuswami Sastri in his introduction to
the āścaryacūdāmani (p. 25) quotes from Abhinavabhārati,
a commentary on Bharata Natyaṣāstra by Abhinavagupta,
the following passage which contains one verse from
Bhāsa : � अधुन� रौद्रं लक्षयत� � अथ रौद्रो नामेति � नामग्रहणस्यायमाशयः � अन्याय-
कारिता प्राधान्ये� क्रोधस्य विषय� � तादृशि � जन� सर्वोऽपि मनोरथैरप� रुधिरपानमप�
कुर्यात् � तथ� चा� लोकः � यद� लभ्येत तत्तदीयं रुधिरमपि पीत्वा � तृप्यत� � महाकविना
भासेनापि स्वम्बन्� उक्तम् �
त्रेतायुगं [|| adhunā raudra� lakṣayati | atha raudro nāmeti | nāmagrahaṇasyāyamāśaya� | anyāya-
kāritā prādhānyena krodhasya viṣaya� | tādṛśi ca jane sarvo'pi manorathairapi rudhirapānamapi
kuryāt | tathā cāha loka� | yadi labhyeta tattadīya� rudhiramapi pītvā na tṛpyate | mahākavinā
bhāsenāpi svambandha uktam |

Abhinavagupta cites this as an instance of raudra."
In deference to Prof. Dhruva's wish we herewith
append our rendering of the verse. For the missing
syllables in the first line we read and propose
‘a खल� [khalu] '
'नास्� [] ' for 'चास्� [] ' in the second line, and 'सुवितृप्तिगामी [ܱṛpپ峾ī] ' for
'� वितृप्तिगामी [na vitṛptigāmī] ' We translate : that (divine) Tretāyuga
