The essay studies the ancillary literature of the Atharva-Veda with special reference to the Parisistas. It does so by understanding the socio-cultural and philosophical aspects of ancient Indian life. The Atharvaveda addresses encompasses all practical aspects of life from health and prosperity to rituals and sorcery.

butter is praised as the lustre which removes sin, pleases
gods and removes the evil effects of omens - terrestrial,

Thereafter the king gazes at the image of his count-
enance reflected in the pot of clarified butter. His head
and chest are touched with curds to the accompaniment of the
71 two mantras beginning with ucca patantam .... The pot of
clarified butter is taken round the king in the clock-wise
manner (pradaksinam) with the mantra suryasya 'vá¹›tam
72 and the ceremony is brought to a close by giving away to the
Purohita a dark cow by way of daksiṇa. This ceremony is said
