The essay studies the ancillary literature of the Atharva-Veda with special reference to the Parisistas. It does so by understanding the socio-cultural and philosophical aspects of ancient Indian life. The Atharvaveda addresses encompasses all practical aspects of life from health and prosperity to rituals and sorcery.

(e) The Brhatsarvanukramani
The Brhatsarvanukramani (BA) belongs to the Saunakiya
recension of the AV. It consists of eleven patalas which
are further divided into 223 sections'. The first ten
patalas take into account the mantras from the first nineteen
kändas of the AV while the eleventh patala is devoted to the
twentieth kända. Obviously enough, the author has found it
necessary to consider the mantras from more than one kända
2 in one patala². At the end of the tenth patala, the words
bhrgvangirä brahmeti are repeated. As is customary, such
repetition indicates the end of the book. It, therefore,
appears, that the eleventh patala was added at a later stage
when several hymns from the RV were incorporated into the
AV-samhita to form its twentieth kända. Moreover, it is
clearly stated at the beginning of the eleventh patala that
the rai, darivata and chandas etc. in regard to the suktas
