Part 1.15 - The Anuradha (Scorpionis)

The Anuradha is the fifteenth constellation and consists of four stars. It belongs to the Rai family of (142) III.1.1.11: naksatranam adhipatni Visakhe. (143) Sakuntala I: yadi visakhe sasankalekham anuvartete. (144) At Taittiriya Brahmana III.1.5.1 the word occurs in masc. as Anuradhebhyah. 346 Maitreya and is presided over by Mitra 145 He is the sage whom all the gods call as the bringer of food. Mitra and the Anuradha are prayed for protection (1.39.5). The northern Andhras and the people from Magadha, Vanga and Matsya, horses and deer are affected by this constellation (1.7.7). According to the Brhatsamhita by Varahamihira (15.15) heroes, commandants, gossiping people, sages and the products in the autumn are under the sway of this constellation. It is said that the sickness caused under the Anuradha lasts for fifteen nights (1.33.6). 146 A ksatriya king should get his elephants anointed under this constellation (1.10.3). One should partake of the corn from the threshing floor and proceed towards the west to return successful (1.29.1). Under the Anuradha the owner of cultivated land (karsanam) should be bathed with water to which is added the earth from a hundred ant-hills. Thereby he prospers with corn and wealth (1.44.5). It is mentioned that a covering garment should be given away under this constellation (1.49.5). (145) At Taittiriya Brahmana III.1.2.1 Mitra is said to go on golden paths spread out in the heaven. Here the sages say that by offering oblations to the Anuradhas they would live for a hundred autumns with hero sons. (146) Taittiriya Brahmana 1.8.4.2 mentions that ploughing should be started under this constellation. Paraskara GS 2.13 adds the Jyestha also.
