This essay studies the Arts in the Puranas by reconstructing the theory of six major fine arts—Music, Dance, Architecture, Sculpture, Painting, and Literature—from the Major and Minor Puranas. This thesis shows how ancient sages studied these arts within the context of cultural traditions of ancient India.

In Sangita Ratnakara we get the term 'Suddhatana'. Sarangadeva
has mentioned the seven Suddhatanas which are (1) Agnistoma
(2) Atyagnistoma (3) Vajapeya (4) Sodasi (5) Pundarika
(6) Asvamedha (7) Rājasūya.68
But Sarangadeva has included the tanas namely Gosava,
Mahāvrata, Prajapatya, Asvakranta, Visnukranta, Suryakrānta
etc. in the twenty-eight Satsvara tanas in the Sadjagrama.
