Story of ѱپٳ

A Rajarṣi of the ū dynasty.

Genealogy.

ū�Janamejaya ʰ峦īԱ�Manasyu—Vīٲ󲹲ⲹ—Śuṇḍ�Bahuvidhaṃyپ‸鲹DZī�󲹻śѲپ‱پٳ�ṇvѱپٳ.

This ѱپٳ got two sons named ٳṣyԳٲ and ʰī. It was this ٳṣyԳٲ who married ŚܲԳٲ. (Chapter 278, Agni Purāṇa).

ѱپٳ was a celebrated sage of ٲ. The 󲹰ṣi referred to in Śūkta 12, Anuvāka 4, Ѳṇḍ 1 of ṻ岹 is ѱپٳ son of ṇv. Once Indra coming in the form of a goat drank the soma of ѱپٳ and the latter called him 'goat' (ѱṣa) and thenceforth Indra got the name ѱṣa. (ūٲ 51, Anuvāka 10, Ѳṇḍ 1, ṻ岹).

We get the following details about ѱپٳ from the Ѳٲ.

(1) He was a King in the court of Indra.

(2) ѱپٳ had a son named ṇvmuni who was popular on the east coast of ٲ. (Śǰ첹 23, Chapter 107, ŚԳپ Parva).

(3) ѱپٳ observed Բٳ and attained Svarga. (Śǰ첹 7, Chapter 336, ŚԳپ Parva).

(4) ѱپٳ was considered to be a sage deserving worship and when he went to see īṣm once Dharmaputra received him with respect and worshipped him. (Śǰ첹 3, Chapter 26, ԳśԲ Parva).
