The Puranas have for centuries profoundly influenced Indian life and Culture and are defined by their characteristic features (panca-lakshana, literally, ‘the five characteristics of a Purana).

Story of ⲹ

Birth.

śⲹ貹, grandson of and son of Ѳī begot of his wife ū powerful like Śṣa, 屹ٲ, ղṣa첹, ṭa첹, , Ѳṇi岵, Purāṇanāga etc. and from them were born all kinds of 岵 on earth. (Ādi Parva, Chapter 35). ⲹ possessed one thousand heads. (岵ٲ, 10th Skandha).

ⲹ taok his abode in Իī.

վԲ and ū were wives of śⲹ貹. The former was the mother of Ҳḍa and the latter of the 岵. In a wager վԲ was defeated and had to become the slave of ū. Ҳḍa brought ṛt from Devaloka and redeemed his mother from slavery. Yet Ҳḍa and the 岵 continued to be enemies, Ҳḍa killing and eating 岵 whenever he got a chance for it. At last the 岵 entered into an understanding with Ҳḍa agreeing to give him the havis (offering) which they got on certain days, and thus Ҳḍa stopped eating the 岵. But ⲹ did not subscribe to the above agreement; he treated Ҳḍa with contempt. But, in an encounter with Ҳḍa ⲹ was put to so much of hardships that he, along with his family, shifted his residence to a particular sector in Իī.

Admission denied to Ҳḍa.

Owing to the curse of a sage called Saubhari, who was performing penance on the banks of Իī, that Ҳḍa would die brokenheaded if he entered Իī, it was a prohibited area to Ҳḍa.

Suppression of ⲹ.

Owing to the virulent poison of ⲹ the waters of Իī became poisonous and the trees on its banks dried up. Once, while ṛṣṇa and his companions, the ҴDZ came to the banks of the river grazing their cows. The ҴDZ drank water from the river and fell down dead. Then ṛṣṇa jumped into the river from the top of a tree on its bank and danced upon the hoods of ⲹ who had rushed to attack him. ⲹ vomited blood and saluted ṛṣṇa. His wives and children also saluted the Lord. ṛṣṇa sent all of them away to 鲹ṇa첹 island assuring ⲹ that Ҳḍa would not attack him on seeing the marks of his (ṛṣṇa's) feet on ⲹ. Thus did ⲹ and his family shift their residence to 鲹ṇa첹 island. (岵ٲ, 10th Skandha).
