जातेराश्रितसंख्यायाः प्रवृत्तिरुपलभ्यते �
संख्याविशेषमुत्सृज्य क्वचित्सैव प्रवर्तत� � ८१ �
पराङ्गभूतं सामान्यं युज्यत� द्रव्यसंख्यय� �
स्वार्थं प्रवर्तमान� तु � संख्यामवलम्बते � ८२ �

jāterāśritasaṃkhyāyā� pravṛttirupalabhyate |
saṃkhyāviśeṣamutsṛjya kvacitsaiva pravartate || 81 ||
parāṅgabhūta� sāmānya� yujyate dravyasaṃkhyayā |
svārtha� pravartamāna� tu na saṃkhyāmavalambate || 82 ||

81. It is seen that the universal, together with the number attached to it, is applied (to action); sometimes, the universal alone, after discarding the number, is applied.

82. Where the universal is subsidiary to something else, there it is associated with the number of the substance (individual). Where, on the other hand, it exists on its own, it does not depend upon the number (of the substance).

Commentary

[Before it was declared that the singular number in graham is not significant on the basis of verbal presentation (ś岹) that is, whether something is presented by words as the main thing or as the secondary thing. Here it is said on the basis of the factual situation (ٲ), that is. whether something is actually the main thing or the secondary thing, that the number of the latter is significant.]
