O descendant of Bharata, the immense sum-total of the material reality (brahma) is My womb, which I impregnate with the seeds of the living entities, who are marginal by nature. It is from here that all souls take birth.

Commentary: S膩r膩rtha-Var峁�i峁嚹� 峁�墨k膩

(By 艢r墨la 痴颈艣惫补苍腻迟丑补 颁补办谤补惫补谤迟墨 峁琱腻办耻谤补; the innermost intention of the commentary named 鈥榯he shower of essential meanings鈥�)

The cause of material bondage is association with the 驳耻峁嘺蝉, the three binding qualities of material nature, which is the consequence of ignorance since time immemorial. To explain this, 艢r墨 叠丑补驳补惫腻苍 is describing how 办峁�e迟谤补 (literally, 鈥榯he field鈥�, the material body) and 办峁�e迟谤补-j帽a (the knower of the field) are born. 鈥�Mahat-brahma is My, 笔补谤补尘别艣惫补谤补鈥檚, womb.鈥� That which cannot be divided by time and place and whose limit cannot be ascertained is called mahat (great). Here brahma refers to 辫谤补办峁泃颈, or material nature, because the creation is an expansion of brahma. In this way, the word mahad-brahma is formed.

In the 艢谤耻迟颈蝉, the word brahma is also sometimes used for 辫谤补办峁泃颈. 顿补诲丑腻尘颈 means 鈥業 place the seed in the form of the 箩墨惫补 in that 辫谤补办峁泃颈, thereby impregnating it鈥�. Itas tv 补苍测腻峁� 辫谤补办峁泃颈峁� viddhi me 辫补谤腻m 箩墨惫补-bh奴t膩m (骋墨迟腻 7.5). This statement mentions that the source of the conscious entities, the 箩墨惫补-辫谤补办峁泃颈, is the marginal potency, the 迟补峁璦蝉迟丑腻-艣补办迟颈, and because it is the life of all beings, the word garbha (conception) has been used. 罢补迟补岣� means, 鈥楢ll living entities (sarva-产丑奴迟腻苍腻尘) beginning from Lord 叠谤补丑尘腻 are born as a result of My impregnating material nature (辫谤补办峁泃颈).鈥�

In this material world, everything happens by the combination of 办峁�e迟谤补 (the body) and 办峁�e迟谤补-j帽a (the living entity).

This combination of 辫谤补办峁泃颈 (material nature) and 辫耻谤耻峁�a (the living entity) happens only by the will of the Lord. The scorpion lays eggs in a pile of rice. People say that scorpions are born from rice, but in fact, rice is not the cause of the scorpions鈥� birth. Scorpions are actually born from eggs. In the same way, the birth of the living entity is not caused by material nature. 叠丑补驳补惫腻苍 places the living entity, the seed, in the womb of material nature, but people think that the 箩墨惫补 is born from material nature. Every living entity gets a different type of body according to his past actions. 笔谤补办峁泃颈 simply creates various material bodies under the supervision of 叠丑补驳补惫腻苍. The 箩墨惫补s who identify themselves with their body enjoy happiness or undergo misery according to their previous activities. It should be clearly understood that 笔补谤补尘别艣惫补谤补 is the original cause of both the living entities and the universe.

艢r墨la Bhaktivinoda 峁琱腻办耻谤补 quotes 碍峁涐梗峁嘺 as saying, 鈥淭he origin of material nature is the universal womb. I impregnate that universal womb, and all beings are born from that. The material aspect of My 辫补谤腻-辫谤补办峁泃颈 (transcendental nature) is brahma (material nature), into which I place the seeds of the 迟补峁璦蝉迟丑腻-箩墨惫补s. Indeed, all the living entities beginning from Lord 叠谤补丑尘腻 are born in this way.鈥�
