विश्वैश्� देवै� साध्यैश्� ब्राह्मणैश्च महर्षिभि� �
आपत्सु मरणाद् भीतैर्विधे� प्रतिनिधिः कृतः � २९ �viśvaiśca devai� sādhyaiśca brāhmaṇaiśca maharṣibhi� |
āpatsu maraṇād bhītairvidhe� pratinidhi� kṛta� || 29 ||The substitute of the Primary Rule was ordained by the վś𱹲, the ⲹ and the great ṇa Sages, when they were afraid of perishing in abnormal times.�(29)
Medhātithi’s commentary (manubhāṣya):
This also means that the substitute shall be adopted only in adversity, never in prosperity.�(29)
