Having vomitted or purged, one should bath and then eat clarified butter. After having eaten his food, he should only sip water. For one who has copulated bathing has been ordained.鈥�(142).

 

Medh膩tithi鈥檚 commentary (manubh膩峁�ya):

鈥榁omitting鈥� and 鈥榩urging鈥� are well known. The man who throws out the food that he has eaten is said to have 鈥�vomitted鈥�. The man the number of whose motions has gone beyond the number eight,鈥� either through disease, or through his having taken 贬补谤墨迟补办墨 or some such purgative鈥攊s said to have 鈥�purged.鈥�

These two persons should first of all bathe.

Then, they should eat clarified butter and then any other kind of food; and the injunction of eating clarified batter is meant to be a prohibition of other kinds of food. Just as in the case of expiatory rites, ashes and water are regarded as means of purification, so in the case in question, is the eating of clarified butter.

鈥�After having taken food he should only sip water鈥欌�� After he has taken his food, if he happen to vomit or purge on the same day, then he should do the sipping of water only, and not. bathing and eating of clarified butter.

Others have taken this independently by itself, to mean that 鈥榓fter having taken his food he should sip water this being a reiteration of the water-sipping that has already been prescribed as to be done after meals.

鈥�One who has copulated,鈥欌赌�i.e., one who has had sexual intercourse with a woman,鈥攂ecomes pure by bathing. (142).

This verse is quoted in 础辫补谤腻谤办补 (p. 922); and again on (p. 926), where it explains the meaning to be that 鈥榠f one vomits after having eaten food, he must wash鈥�;鈥攊n 惭颈迟腻办峁�a谤腻 (on 3.30), which adds, like 础辫补谤腻谤办补, that the last clause refers to sexual intercourse during the wife鈥檚 鈥榗ourses鈥�;鈥攊n 痴墨谤补尘颈迟谤辞诲补测补 (膧hnika, p. 106), which notes that 鈥�惫颈谤颈办迟补岣�鈥� means 鈥榦ne who has abnormal purgings,鈥欌赌攁nd that the meaning is that 鈥榠f one vomits after he has taken his food, he should only wash, and not bathe鈥�;鈥攁nd again on p. 199 where the construction of the second half is explained as 鈥�bhuktv膩 annam 惫腻苍迟补岣�,鈥� whence the meaning is that on vomitting immediately after food, there should be washing only,鈥攖he particle 鈥�eva鈥� serving to preclude the bathing which is prescribed in the first half of the verse for one who has 鈥榲omitted鈥�;鈥攖he 鈥榮exual intercourse,鈥� refers to that during the courses;鈥攊n 艢耻诲诲丑颈办补耻尘耻诲墨 (p. 331), which explains 鈥�惫颈谤颈办迟补岣�鈥� as 鈥榦ne who has had many motions,鈥� and adds that if one vomits immediately after taking his food, he is simply to rinse his mouth, and for the man who has had sexual intercourse during the wife鈥檚 鈥榩eriod,鈥� he is cleansed by bathing;鈥攊n 狈颈迟测腻肠腻谤补辫谤补诲墨辫补 (p. 334), which says that 鈥�惫腻苍迟补岣�鈥� is understood after 鈥�bhuktv膩 annam,鈥� and adds the same notes;鈥攁nd in 贬别尘腻诲谤颈 (艢r膩ddha, p. 796).

 

Comparative notes by various authors

膧辫补蝉迟补尘产补 (2.1.21-23).鈥斺�楧uring intercourse only they shall he together; afterwards separate; then they shall both bathe.鈥�

痴颈峁ａ箛耻 (22.67).鈥斺�楤athing is also ordained after sexual intercourse, after bad dreams, also when blood has issued from the throat and after having vomited or been purged,鈥�

笔补谤腻艣补谤补 (础辫补谤腻谤办补, p. 922).鈥斺�楢fter bad dreams and sexual intercourse, or vomiting, or purging, or shaving,... one should bathe.鈥�
