Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration, Word-for-word and English translation of verse 2.3.171:
तन-ना-सङ्कीर्तन-मात्रतोऽखिला भक्त हरेः स्यूर् हत-दुःख-दुषनाः
केचित् तथाप प्रभुवत् कृपाकुला लोकान् सद-आचारम् इम प्रशासति १७ tan-nāma-ṅkīٲԲ-mātrato'khilā bhaktā syūr hata-duḥkha-duṣanā |
kecit ٲٳ辱 prabhuvat kṛpākulā ǰ sad-ācāram ima śپ || 171 ||tan–of Him; 峾-ṅkīٲԲ-ٰٲ–merely by collective chanting of holy names; –a; –d𱹴dzٱ; –of Śī Hari; –a; ٲ-ḥk-ūṣaṇāḥ–free from the bad results of sufferings; kecit–sdz; ٲٳ辱–n𱹱ٳ; prabhuvat–like the Lord; ṛp-ܱ–eagerly absorbed in compassion; ǰ–to the people; -峦–pure conduct; imam–t; śپ–iԲٰܳ.
Although merely by performance of ṅkīٲԲ of the names of Śī , the sufferings and faults of all devotees are destroyed, still, some devotees who are merciful just like the Supreme Lord accept distress or exhibit flaws just to instruct ordinary people about proper conduct.
Commentary: Dig-darśinī-ṭīkā with Bhāvānuvāda
(By Śīla Sanātana Gosvāmī himself including a deep purport of that commentary)
Śī Gopa-ܳ might object, “Is it not their duty to manifest that great treasure of nāma-ṅkīٲԲ for the deliverance of the whole world?
The ղṇṭ associates reply in this verse beginning with ٲԲ峾. They say, “All the faults and distresses of the devotees of Hari are indeed destroyed by the chanting of the name of the Lord (nāmaṅkīٲԲ). However, being merciful like , some devotees give instruction on virtuous conduct (峦), for instance, in the form of rejecting bad association. If one does not adopt proper behavior, one’s heart will be tainted by sin, and the inclination for devotional service will not arise naturally.
