Description of the photo
This is the figure of Siva as Bhairavar. He is Astabhuja with various Ayudhas. His main right and left hands are holding a Trisula, his other left hands are holding a Damaru, Agni, Mrga, Kapala as Bhiksapatram. Others are not clear. �Bhairava is a fierce form of Siva which he assumed to destroy the ego of Brahma. Bhairava cut of the fifth head of Brahma when he started interfering with Siva’s activities.�

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
