Vicchandayati (विच्छन्दयत) or Vichandayati.—for which forms of vi-chind- occur [Page484-b+ 71] in mss., compare also vicchindika and prec.; see Wogihara, Lex. (mss. vary in ǻ󾱲ٳٱū between a and i); in Pali (kāya-)- vicchinda occurs as title of Jātaka (Pali) 293, surely meaning aversion from the body, not cutting off of; in Pv. commentary 129.26 atidānato vicchinditukāmo clearly means wanting to dissuade from over-generosity, = [Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit] vi-chand-; Pali (kāya-)vicchandaniya(-kathā) and (kāya-)vicchandanika- (-sutta) cannot be separated from (kāya-)vicchinda, above; in پ屹Բ 590.24 even the v.l. vicchedayām āsu occurs for vicchandayām āsu. It is clear that Pali and [Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit] both show what must, therefore, be a very old confusion between chand- and -chi(n)d- here. As Kern (cited [Pali Text Society’s Pali-English Dictionary] s.v. vicchinda), Wogihara, and some others have seen, the orig. form was surely vicchandayati; the forms with chi(n)d- are due to popular [etymology] (in some occurrences the word means something close to cuts off). The funda- mental meaning is makes undersirous (denom., vi plus chanda); so Tibetan mos pa zlog pa on Ѳ屹ܳٱ貹ٳپ, ḥdun pa zlog on Kāśyapa Parivarta, both meaning desire-deterring, desire-dissuading, but on Lalitavistara simply zlog par byed pa, dissuasion-(deterring-)making: °dayati Ѳ屹ܳٱ貹ٳپ 6527, followed by vicakṣu-karaṇāya; bhūyo- bhūya sa mā °dayati, bhadramukhāniṣṭo 'sya karmaṇo phalavipāka پ屹Բ 10.6, similarly 11.24, dissuades; °dayām āsu (v.l. see above) 590.24; (Māraḥ) bodhisattva …eva °dayiṣyati ṣṭ󲹲-ñ 331.16, will (try to) dissuade; (iha…bodhisattvasya…pāpamitra, ya prajñāpāra- mitāyā) caranta virecayati (q.v.) vichandayati Śٲ󲹲-ñ 1185.19, modulated in the sequel (the means of dissuasion are given 1186.1 ff.; they consist of attacks on the dog- matic interpretation of Buddhism accepted in this school); (devaputrāḥ…Māraṃ) vicchandayanti Lalitavistara 333.20 and 335.10 (prose), dissuade, discourage Māra (by pre- dicting his defeat); °dayati vikṣipati Kāśyapa Parivarta 1.6; when the thing dissuaded from is expressed it is regularly abl., dānād vicchandayan Jm 24.7; (saṃgrahavastubhyo) vic- chandya Śṣāsܳⲹ 50.12; adattādānād °dayati Ҳṇḍū 155.15; vichandya (v.l. vichindya) with ablatives ǻ󾱲ٳٱū 16.2 ff., so also °dayet 27.12; °dayati (v.l. °chind°) 262.13; but once apparently acc., (yasmāt tva bhikṣucaraṇapranā- ma) mā °dayitum icchasi پ屹Բ 383.6, since you wish to dissuade me (against, from) bowing at the feet of monks (or is this acc. a [ܱī] adj., me characterized by bowing etc. ?).

context information

Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम (ṃsṛt), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
