Subanta (सुबन्त).—Name given to a word formed with the addition of a case-affix and hence capable of being used in a sentence by virtue of its being called a पद (pada) by the rule सुप्तिङन्त� पदम् (supپṅaԳٲ� padam) The ancient grammarians gave four kinds of words or padas viz. ना�, आख्यात, उपसर्ग (, ٲ, upasarga) and निपा� (Ծٲ) which Panini has brought under two heads सुबन्त (subanta) including ना�, उपसर्ग (, upasarga) and निपा� (Ծٲ) and तिङन्त (پṅaԳٲ) standing for आख्यात� (ٲ�) cf. सुप्तिङन्त� पदम् (supپṅaԳٲ� padam) P. I. 4. 14.
