The N墨lamata mentions the threefold division of the universe indicated by the expressions like Tribhuvana, Trailokya etc. Evidently, the earth is the middle part, above and below which, are the heavens and the nether worlds (e.g., 艢颈濒腻产丑补耻尘补). But as a matter of fact, the division seems to be twofold only, for the earth itself is regarded as the lowest of the seven upper regions.
