Theravāda is a major branch of Buddhism having the the Pali canon (tipitaka) as their canonical literature, which includes the vinaya-pitaka (monastic rules), the sutta-pitaka (Buddhist sermons) and the abhidhamma-pitaka (philosophy and psychology).

According to the tradition, the Thera Mahinda and his companions alighted in B.C. 246 on the Sīla peak, on the open tableland Ambatthala, on Missakapabbata: then followed the meeting with king Devānaṃpiya Tissa, the visit to Գܰܰ, the conversion of the king and the establishment of Buddhism as the religion of the Sinhalese people.
