: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English Translationܻٳⲹ (रुद्रमाहात्म्य) refers to the “greatness of lord Śiva�, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.2.36. Accordingly, as Vīrabhadra said to Viṣṇu:—“[...] O Viṣṇu, how is it that you set at nought the affirmation of lord Śiva? Why were you haughty? [...] O Viṣṇu, of evil conduct, O the worst of Śiva’s haters, don’t you know the greatness and sanctity of lord Śiva [i.e., śīܻٳⲹ?�.

The Purana (पुरा�, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
