Puṭkuḻi refers to one of the 108 Vaishnava Divya Desam (徱ⲹś or divyasthalas), located in the topographical division of Toṇṭaināṭu (“Northern Tamil Nadu�), according to the 9th century Nālāyirativviyappirapantam (shortly Nālāyiram).—Tradition would record the Vaiṣṇava 徱ⲹś or divyasthalas are 108. The 徱ⲹś is a base of the cult of Viṣṇu in Viṣṇuism [Vaiṣṇavism] tradition. The list of 108 [viz., Puṭkuḻi] seems to have reached maturation by about the early 9th century CE as all the ś are extolled in the hymns of the twelve Āḻvārs.

Putkuli refers to one of the 108 divyadesas according to Priyavaccan Pillai’s compendium of the Ramayana based on the Nalayirativviyappirapantam.—Putkuli is dedicated to Vijaya-Raghava Perumal, the Victorious Rama. According to the Vamana Purana, Rama is said to have stayed at this venue for some time. Jatayu is said to have been offered moksa at this divyadesa. There is a separate chapel for Jatayu, maybe the only one of its type.
