: Journal of South Asian Intellectual History: Samarasi峁僪a and the Early Transmission of T膩jika Astrology笔谤补办峁泃测补诲丑颈办腻谤补 (啶啶班啷冟い啷嵿く啶оた啶曕ぞ啶�) (lit. 鈥渞egarding the native鈥檚 nature鈥�) is the name of the thirteenth chapter of the 碍补谤尘补辫谤补办腻艣补鈥攐ne of the earliest preserved Sanskrit works on Perso-Arabic (T膩jika) astrology authored by Samarasi峁僪a in the 13th century.鈥擳he first few verses of chapter 13 (辫谤补办峁泃测补诲丑颈办腻谤补) bring us back to the topic of directions through the terms begun in chapter 10. Based on the same section of Ab奴 Bakr鈥檚 work, they clearly demonstrate Samarasi峁僪a鈥檚 lack of understanding of the mechanics of direction (迟补蝉测墨谤). [...] The remainder of the chapter is based on the immediately following section of the Kitab al-maw膩l墨d, treating the moral character of the native. [...] As it stands, the 碍补谤尘补辫谤补办腻艣补 (13.5鈥�26) lists, in order, planetary configurations for courage, cowardice, irascibility, forbearance, shamelessness, bashfulness, eloquence, compassion, deceit and mendacity; further, for becoming a jester or entertainer, robber, thief, adulterer or adulteress, or a faithful husband; and finally, for generosity and greed.
Jyotisha (啶溹啶啶むた啶�, 箩测辞迟颈峁 or jyotish) refers to 鈥榓stronomy鈥� or 鈥淰edic astrology鈥� and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
