Source: Wisdom Library: Brihat Samhita by VarahamihiraPavanabhaya (啶さ啶ㄠき啶�) refers to 鈥渇ear from storms鈥�, according to the B峁沨atsa峁僪it膩 (chapter 7), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Var膩hamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyoti峁).鈥擜ccordingly, 鈥淢ercury (Budha) never reappears after his conjunction with the sun without upsetting the existing order of things: he causes fear from flood, from fire and from storms [i.e., pavanabhaya] and paralizes trade by abnormally enhancing or lowering the price of food grains. If Mercury should cut through the constellations of 艢rava峁嘺, Dhani峁ａ弓h膩, Rohi峁嚹�, M峁沢a艣墨r峁 and Uttar膩峁Ｄ佱笉ha, sacred respectively to Vi峁ａ箛u, A峁ａ弓avasu, Brahm膩, the Moon and Vi艣vedev膩, his disc appearing to rub against those of the stars, he causes drought and disease in the land鈥�.
Jyotisha (啶溹啶啶むた啶�, 箩测辞迟颈峁 or jyotish) refers to 鈥榓stronomy鈥� or 鈥淰edic astrology鈥� and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
