ūٲ첹 (मूलखात�) refers to “those living by digging up the roots of trees etc.�. When disputes arise regarding the boundaries of villages, and in the absence of original inhabitants of neighbouring villages, the King may choose these ‘diggers of roots� to act as witnesses. The word is used throughout Dharmaśāstra literature such as the ѲԳܲṛt. (See the ѲԳܲṣy, verse 8.260)
