Natyashastra (theatrics and dramaturgy)
: Shodhganga: Elements of Art and Architecture in the Trtiyakhanda of the Visnudharmottarapurana (natya)²Ń³Ü»å°łÄå±ō²¹į¹kÄå°ł²¹ (ą¤®ą„ą¤¦ą„ą¤°ą¤¾ą¤²ą¤ą¤ą¤¾ą¤) refers to the āintroduction of the characters through the very first verse of the dramaā which should be recited at the end of a Drama, according to the Viį¹£į¹udharmottarapurÄį¹a, an ancient Sanskrit text which (being encyclopedic in nature) deals with a variety of cultural topics such as arts, architecture, music, grammar and astronomy.āIn the very beginning of the Drama each and every character should be introduced and that is why the presence of every character is made mandatory just after the unveiling of the curtain. This is to be noted here that in most of the dramas of BhÄsa, the names of the main characters are introduced through the very first verse of the drama and this is generally called the ³¾³Ü»å°łÄå±ō²¹į¹kÄå°ł²¹. Thus the SvapnavÄsavadatta of BhÄsa opens with the verse where the characters Udayana, VÄsavadattÄ, PadmÄvatÄ«, Vasantaka are introduced before the audience.

Natyashastra (ą¤Øą¤¾ą¤ą„ą¤Æą¤¶ą¤¾ą¤øą„ą¤¤ą„र, ²ŌÄåį¹y²¹ÅÄå²õ³Ł°ł²¹) refers to both the ancient Indian tradition (shastra) of performing arts, (natyaātheatrics, drama, dance, music), as well as the name of a Sanskrit work dealing with these subjects. It also teaches the rules for composing Dramatic plays (nataka), construction and performance of Theater, and Poetic works (kavya).
