Khaskhasa (खसà¥à¤–à¤�) is the Sanskrit name for a medicinal plant identified with Papaver somniferum Linn. (or ‘opium poppyâ€�) from the Papaveraceae or “poppyâ€� family of flowering plants, according to verse 4.163 of the 13th-century Raj Nighantu or RÄjanighaṇṭu. Khaskhasa is commonly known in Hindi as Ahiphen, AfÄ«m or Post; in Bengali as Terbriksa; in Marathi as AfÅ«; in Gujarati as DodÄvÄ or AfÄ«nÄ; in Telugu as GÄsÄlÅ«; and in Kannada as AfÄ«m. Note: Khaskhas is actually known for the seeds of Papaver somniferum, which is less toxic then opium itself, because the fibre content is much more in it that the active principles.
