: Shodhganga: The significance of the mūla-beras (śilpa)Goumāri is the name of one of the ṣṭśپ, or “eight powers� as found depicted in the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai (or Madura), which represents a sacred place for the worship of The Goddess (Devī).—The entrance on the eastern side of the temple leads to the ṣṭśپ-maṇḍapa. On the left there are four śپ (powers) [viz., Goumāri]. Goumāri is represented as standing in 岹-ٳԲ첹 with four hands where the upper right and left hands hold 첹ٲīܰ and the lower right hand holds 貹첹 and the lower left hand holds 貹첹 inverted. In iconography she is represented in ṅg with four hands. The upper right and left hands hold vajra and śپ in 첹ٲīܰ-hasta and the lower right and left hands are in abhaya and varada-hasta respectively.
