Purana and Itihasa (epic history)
: archive.org: Puranic EncyclopediaDattamitra (दत्तमित्�).—This is another name of Sumitra the King of Sauvīra. Arjuna, during his conquest of the countries, defeated this King. (Mahābhārata Ādi Parva, Chapter 188, Stanza 20).

The Purana (पुरा�, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
