Ke艣ava starts his work after praising Pi峁単ala. He says: After bowing down (respectfully) to Pi峁単ala and consulting the views of Pi峁単ala, the Chanda岣ゲ蹙被寤宄竽宀猿俨筨h膩skara is composed by me, the son of Vy膩sa S奴raj墨. This work is an exposition of Chanda艣艣膩stra of Pi峁単ala and to remove the misconception about the chandas. To justify the name of his text he says it is the 蝉颈诲诲丑腻苍迟补, compared to a sun (Bh膩skara) to remove the darkness (诲丑惫腻苍迟补) compared with misconception (产丑谤腻苍迟颈).
Chandas (啶涏え啷嵿う啶膏) refers to Sanskrit prosody and represents one of the six Vedangas (auxiliary disciplines belonging to the study of the Vedas). The science of prosody (chandas-shastra) focusses on the study of the poetic meters such as the commonly known twenty-six metres mentioned by Pingalas.
