Therav膩da is a major branch of Buddhism having the the Pali canon (tipitaka) as their canonical literature, which includes the vinaya-pitaka (monastic rules), the sutta-pitaka (Buddhist sermons) and the abhidhamma-pitaka (philosophy and psychology).

: Ancient Buddhist Texts: Geography of Early BuddhismBrahmavaddhana is another name for Benares (viz., B膩r膩峁嘺s墨), the capital of 碍腻蝉墨: one of the sixteen Mah膩janapadas of the Majjhimadesa (Middle Country) of ancient India, as recorded in the P膩li Buddhist texts (detailing the geography of ancient India as it was known in to Early Buddhism).鈥擨n the A峁単uttara Nik膩ya 碍腻蝉墨 is included in the list of sixteen Mah膩janapadas. Its capital was B膩r膩峁嘺s墨 (mod. Benares) which had other names as well, viz. Surundhana, Sudassana, Brahmavaddhana, Pupphavat墨, Ramma and Molin墨. The extent of the city is mentioned as 12 yojanas whereas Mithil膩 and Indapatta were each only seven leagues in extent.

Pali is the language of the Tipi峁璦ka, which is the sacred canon of Therav膩da Buddhism and contains much of the Buddha鈥檚 speech. Closeley related to Sanskrit, both languages are used interchangeably between religions.
