Bhirukaccha (啶�啶苦ぐ啷佮�曕�氞�嵿��) or Bhirukaccha is the name of a city named after Bhiru according to the 顿颈惫测腻惫补诲腻苍补, as recorded in the P膩li Buddhist texts (detailing the geography of ancient India as it was known in to Early Buddhism).鈥擨n the 顿颈惫测腻惫补诲腻苍补 there is a very interesting story accounting for the name of the city. It is said that Rudr膩ya峁嘺, King of Roruka (may be identical with Alor, an old city of Sindh), in Sauv墨ra was killed by his son Sikha峁囜笉i. As a punishment of this crime, the realm of Sikha峁囜笉墨, the parricide king, was destroyed by a heavy shower of sands. Three pious men only survived鈥攖wo ministers and a Buddhist monk鈥攚ho went out in search of a new land. Bhiru, one of the two ministers at last found one and established a new city there which came to he named after him鈥擝hiruka or Bhirukaccha whence came the name Bharukaccha.

Bhrigukaccha is, however, the Sanskrit rendering which means 鈥檋igh coast land鈥� and the city is exactly situated on a high coast land. According to Brahmanical tradition, the city was so called because it was founded by the sage Bhrigu. Bhrigukaccha is mentioned in the K奴rmavibh膩ga and Bhuvanako峁�a; and it is identical with Barygaza of Ptolemy and the Periplus of the Erythrean Sea. It is modern Broach in Kathiawar.
