: Wikipedia: Jyotisha (astronomy)µþ³ó²¹á¹á¹´Ç³Ù±è²¹±ô²¹ (à¤à¤Ÿà¥à¤Ÿà¥‹à¤¤à¥à¤ªà¤�) or Utpala (from Kashmir) is the name of a 10th-century Indian commentator of VÄrÄha Mihira’s Bá¹›hatsaṃhitÄ and Bá¹›hajjÄtaka.—The Bá¹›hatsaṃhitÄ is a SaṃhitÄ text of Jyotiá¹£a (Indian astrology and astronomy) . SaṃhitÄ is one of three branches of Jyotiá¹£a (SaṃhitÄ has many other meanings outside Jyotiá¹£a). µþ³ó²¹á¹á¹´Ç³Ù±è²¹±ô²¹ is known for quoting six verses from SÅ«rya SiddhÄnta which are not found in its extant version. These six verses can be found in the ‘Introductionâ€� by S. Jain to the translation of SÅ«rya SiddhÄnta made by E. Burgess. µþ³ó²¹á¹á¹´Ç³Ù±è²¹±ô²¹ is also the author of a commentary on Brahmagupta’s Khaṇá¸akhÄdyaka (7th century). In this, he is a successor of Pá¹›thÅ«daka and a predecessor of Amaraja.

Jyotisha (जà¥à¤¯à¥‹à¤¤à¤¿à¤�, Âá²â´Ç³Ù¾±á¹£a or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomyâ€� or “Vedic astrologyâ€� and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
