Arh (अर्ह�).�1 P. [अर्हति, अर्हितुम�, अर्हित (arhati, arhitum, arhita)] (epic A. as rāvaṇo nārhate pūjām 峾.)

1) To deserve, merit, be worthy of (with acc. or inf.); किमि� नायुष्मानमरेश्वरान्नार्हति (kimiva nāyuṣԲareśvarānnārhati) Ś.7; so दण्डम्, प्रायश्चित्तम्, वधम् (岹ṇḍ, prāyaścittam, vadham) &c.

2) To have a right to, be entitled to, be allowed to do anything (with acc.); नन� गर्भ� पित्र्यं रिक्थमर्हत� (nanu garbha� pitrya� rikthamarhati) Ś.6; � स्त्री स्वातन्त्र्यमर्हति (na strī svātantryamarhati) Manusmṛti 9.3; also with inf. � � तल्लब्धुमर्हति (na sa tallabdhumarhati) Manusmṛti 8.147;11.7,18.

3) To be obliged or required to do a thing, oft. implying duty or obligation; नान्यत्स्त्री दातुमर्हति (nānyatstrī dātumarhati) Y.2.49; इमां प्रसादयितुमर्हसि (imā� prasādayitumarhasi) R.1.88.

4) To be fit or deserve to be done; अर्थना मय� भवद्भि� कर्तुमर्हत� (arthanā mayi bhavadbhi� kartumarhati) N.5.112; Daśakumāracarita 137.

5) To be equal to, be worth, � ते गात्राण्युपचारमर्हन्ति (na te gātrāṇyupacāramarhanti) Ś.3. 17 are not equal to; सर्व� ते जपयज्ञस्� कलां नार्हन्त� षोडशीम् (sarve te japayajñasya kalā� nārhanti ṣoḍaśīm) Manusmṛti 2.86;3.131.

6) To be able, translatable by, 'can'; � मे वचनमन्यथ� भवितुमर्हत� (na me vacanamanyathā bhavitumarhati) Ś.4; विनाशमव्ययस्यास्� � कश्चित्कर्तुमर्हति (vināśamavyayasyāsya na kaścitkartumarhati) Bhagavadgītā (Bombay) 2.17; अनुद्योगेन तैलानि तिलेभ्यो नाप्तुमर्हति (anudyogena tailāni tilebhyo nāptumarhati) H. Pr.3 cannot get.

7) To worship, honour; see caus. below.

8) (Used with inf. in the second pers. and sometimes in the third) अर्ह� (arh) represents a mild form of command, advice or courteous request, and may be translated by 'pray', 'deign', 'be pleased to', will be pleased to'; द्वित्राण्यहान्यर्हस� सोढुमर्हन् (dvitrāṇyahānyarhasi soḍhumarhan) R.5.25 pray wait &c. नार्हस� मे प्रणयं विहन्तुम� (nārhasi me praṇaya� vihantum) 2.58; तं सन्त� श्रोतुमर्हन्ति (ta� santa� śrotumarhanti) 1. 1 will be pleased or be good enough to listen to it; Kumārasambhava 6.32; Manusmṛti 1.2; Bhagavadgītā (Bombay) 1.16,2.17; R.1.72; 1.88;3.46. -Caus. or 1 P.
