: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationAkharva (अखर्�) refers to a “straight (head)�, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.5.15 (“The birth of Jalandhara and his marriage�).—Accordingly, after Bhārgava narrated the details regarding the headless Rāhu: “[...] Ghasmara, the intelligent emissary of Jalandhara, hastened to heaven where all the gods were present. After going there, the emissary entered the assembly of the gods. With his head kept straight (akharva-mauli) as a token of haughtiness he spoke to lord Indra [garvādakharvamaulirhi devendra� vākyamabravīt]. [...]�.

The Purana (पुरा�, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
