Ā徱𱹲ٲ (आदिदेव).—Gaṇeśa is called “Ādi-devata, the first god to be worshipped. He is known as the lord of beginnings and is traditionally invoked first, not only by Gaṇapati devotees, but also by devotees of any other god or goddess. At the beginning of a text, at the commencement of a classical dance performance or the opening song of a concert, even the initial shrine that is visited when one visits a temple, this is Gaṇeśa’s domain.

It is said that Lord Śiva first worshipped Gaṇeśa before he fought with the demon Tripura; that Lord Rāma first worshipped Gaṇeśa before he fought Rāvaṇa; that Ādiśeṣa first worshipped Gaṇeśa before he undertook to bear the entire earth on his back; that Indra first worshipped Gaṇapati before he vanquished Vṛtta; that Durga first worshipped Gaṇeśa before she killed Mahiśāsura; that Lord Kṛṣṇa first worshipped Gaṇapati before he set out to absolve himself of a false charge (of murdering Satrājita); that Lord Viṣṇu first worshipped Gaṇeśa before he sought the three steps from Bali; that Lord Brahmā first worshipped Gaṇapati before he began creation; and that Manmatha first worshipped Gaṇeśa before he commenced to charm humanity.
