Philosophy of language in the Five Nikayas

This page relates 鈥楾he Buddhist Pali Tipitaka (Introduction)鈥� of the study of the Philosophy of language in the Five Nikayas, from the perspective of linguistics. The Five Nikayas, in Theravada Buddhism, refers to the five books of the Sutta Pitaka (鈥淏asket of Sutra鈥�), which itself is the second division of the Pali Tipitaka of the Buddhist Canon (literature).
2. The Buddhist 笔腻濒颈 罢颈辫颈峁璦办补 (Introduction)
The 罢颈辫颈峁璦办补 鈥楾hree Collections of the Buddhist Canon/Three Baskets/Three separate divisions of the Buddha鈥檚 Teachings鈥� is a tremendous body of the 笔腻濒颈 Canonical literature in which are enshrined the Buddha鈥檚 Teachings regarded by the 罢丑别谤补惫腻诲补 school of Buddhism, which is found today in Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. Three months after the 笔补谤颈苍颈产产腻苍补 鈥楨ternal peace鈥� of the Buddha, the great disciples recited together all the Teachings of their Master. They attempted to compile the Buddha鈥檚 Teachings systematically and carefully, and then classified them under different heads into specialised sections.
The 笔腻濒颈 Canonical literature consists of the three 笔颈峁璦办补蝉, literally 鈥榖asket鈥�, or 罢颈辫颈峁璦办补 for 笔腻濒颈/罢谤颈辫颈峁璦办补 for Sanskrit; that is,
- the Vinaya 笔颈峁璦办补 鈥楤asket of Discipline鈥�,
- the Sutta 笔颈峁璦办补 鈥楤asket of Sutra鈥�, and
- the Abhidhamma 笔颈峁璦办补 鈥楤asket of Philosophical treatises of the Doctrine鈥�.
Before going to briefly introduce and discuss the Vinaya Pitaka, to deal with and examine the Sutta 笔颈峁璦办补 in detail, and to take a general view on the Abhidhamma 笔颈峁璦办补 respectively, we should generally know the history of Buddhist Councils from which the 罢颈辫颈峁璦办补 were established.
